Charity financials by cause code

One CSV per IRS cause code per year, built from 2,102,002 Form 990 filings. Each row is one charity: revenue, contributions, expenses, programme spend, staff costs and the highest salary they reported. Free to use for anything, no attribution required.

Tax year

Grouped by the year each charity is reporting on, not the year the IRS posted the filing. Coverage differs by year: the earliest are thin because our corpus starts in 2019, and the latest are still being filed.

Do not compare totals across years. A year marked partial has fewer filings because of what we hold, not because fewer charities existed.

Tax year 2024, by sector — 358,128 filings, complete

Codes are the IRS National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities. Other years are in the switcher above.

What is and is not in here. Only the full Form 990 carries these figures, so 990-EZ and 990-PF filers are absent — meaning small charities are under-represented and the totals are not a census of the sector. Ratios are computed only where both sides are present; a blank is a missing figure, never a zero. And figures are as each organisation reported them: we do not adjust, score or rank them.
